Step by step guides > Rock Shox Lyrik lower service
-
Step 1
Ensure the forks are thoroughly cleaned. You don't want any muck geting into the shiny precision made internals! Clamp the forks in a workstand or soft jaw vice. It is possible to do this with them on the bike, but it is far harder.
-
Step 2
With the forks roughly horizontal, pull out the rebound adjuster. It can get stuck with grit, so a small screwdriver may be needed to pry it out. -
Step 3
Undo the two bolts in the bottom of the legs about 3 turns. Don't fully unscrew.
-
Step 4
Strike the bolts with a soft faced mallet to release the shafts from the lower legs. You may need to unscrew the bolts another couple of turns and strike them again if the shafts don't quite release. Once the shafts have released, unscrew the bolts fully.
-
Step 5
Slide the lowers about an inch down the uppers, turn the forks the right way up and be ready to catch the oil that should drain out. There shouldn't be much - if none comes out, you needed to do the lower service a long time ago! Once the majority of the oil has drained out, slide the lowers all the way off.
-
Step 6
Remove the foams from below the wiper seals. Clean the insides of the lowers thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol, paying particular attention to the oil and wiper seals. Clean the uppers and check for any signs of wear.
-
Step 7
Clean the foams but NOT with isopropyl alcohol. They react badly to it and swell up. Use a milder degreaser or light oil. -
Step 8
Reinstall the foams and soak them with 15 WT suspension oil or a dedicated lower mix. -
Step 9
Fill the wiper seals with grease such as RSP ultra slick. DO NOT use a lithium based grease. -
Step 10
Slide the lowers back onto the upper legs. Make sure the bottom out bumpers in the lowers stay where they should be. It is a safer bet to do this step with the forks vertical to avoid this. Only engage about 2 inches of the uppers in the lowers. -
Step 11
With the forks slightly above horizontal, inject 15 ml of 15 WT oil or a dedicated lower mix through each bolt hole. The aim here is to fill the space between the bushings with the oil. -
Step 12
Slide the lowers all the way on, refit the lower bolts and tighten to 4 Nm.
Done.
Go out and ride.
